Truck Driver Dies After Hitting Overpass

A 76-year-old truck driver was killed in Lodi, New Jersey on Route 17 on Monday. The driver was from Newburgh, N.Y. and may have lost control of his vehicle on a snowy patch of the road. His truck slammed into a column of the Route 80 overpass.

Carney said there was no indication alcohol played a role in the accident, though toxicology results are pending.

"We have a witness and are going over his statement, but this seems to be a straight accident," he said.

The trailer was empty at the time of the accident, said police Sgt. James Giblin.

Police are still investigating the accident. Route 17 was closed in both directions for a few hours while the area was cleaned up. It is believed the weather may have played a role in the accident.
