Ten people suffered serious injuries, and it took over 300 firefighters to extinguish the blaze.

For more information on this subject, please refer to the section on Tractor-trailer accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Claude Wyle

Trucker Chases Hat: Struck by SUV.

Rick Uvaney, a trucker, survived being struck by a SUV in Canton, Ohio with relatively few injuries earlier this week. Uvaney pulled off the freeway to secure his load, when a sudden gust of wind blew his baseball cap he had worn for years into the median. Uvaney walked over to retrieve his hat, and was struck by an SUV. Uvaney's injuries, a broken wrist and dislocated shoulder, could have been much worse. This is a good reminder to remember the old lesson: look both ways before crossing.

For more information on this matter, please review the section on Tractor-Trailer Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Claude Wyle

Verdict: CHP 911 "Grossly Negligent."

A San Francisco Superior Court Jury found the CHP 911 dispatch center "grossly negligent" in mishandling a deadly trucking accident. The mishandling of the 2003 call was a factor in the death of Richard Housley, who was crushed between the truck and trailer of the truck he was driving. The jury determined that 911 dispatch center departed from its standard procedures when they failed to call an ambulance, yet reported one was on its way.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Claude Wyle

Failure of scaffolding on a highway on ramp near Chico, California caused a catastrophic highway accident early this morning. Miraculously, no fatalities occurred when thirty-six tons of steel collapsed on top of vehicles underneath. Three people suffered serious injuries, including multiple broken bones. One survivor was trapped in his FedEx truck for more than three hours before being rescued.
Distracted Driver Hits Tomato Truck; Kills Passenger

The death of a 23-year-old woman this Sunday could have been avoided if only the driver in the van she rode in paid more attention to surrounding traffic conditions. Just south of the Herndon crossing on northbound I-5 at approximately 9:54 p.m., Pakom Lengsrichaem sped along at 75 mph. He did not notice traffic slowing ahead of him, and rear-ended a tomato truck moving at 15 mph. The tomato truck driver escaped with only minor injuries, but Lengsrichaem sustained serious injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
Truck Driver Dies After Hitting Overpass

A 76-year-old truck driver was killed in Lodi, New Jersey on Route 17 on Monday. The driver was from Newburgh, N.Y. and may have lost control of his vehicle on a snowy patch of the road. His truck slammed into a column of the Route 80 overpass.

Carney said there was no indication alcohol played a role in the accident, though toxicology results are pending.

"We have a witness and are going over his statement, but this seems to be a straight accident," he said.

The trailer was empty at the time of the accident, said police Sgt. James Giblin.

Police are still investigating the accident. Route 17 was closed in both directions for a few hours while the area was cleaned up. It is believed the weather may have played a role in the accident.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Driver Causes Serious Injuries in San Francisco Truck Crash

A driver of a work truck Tuesday afternoon crashed into a car, then rear-ended a Muni bus, and then smashed into another car, in the intersection of Fourth and Howard streets in San Francisco. This serious auto accident, sent two occupants of a Honda struck by the truck to San Francisco General Hospital in critical condition. The man who caused this truck accident with serious personal injuries claims that he had an illness which caused him to crash the truck.

First, the truck driver rear-ended a car travelling along Fourth Street near Minna Street. Next, he stopped for a second, then continued, and struck the rear-end of a stationary bus. Then the truck rebounded off the Muni bus and careened into the intersection where it T-boned a Honda with two men inside. The Honda ricocheted and hit a different truck, which then hit another car.

The two passengers in the Honda sustained serious personal injuries including head and brain injuries, broken bones, and other trauma, and were taken by ambulance to San Francisco General Hospital.

This truck driver claims that the crash was caused by an illness from which he was suffering. The driver was also taken to the hospital. Under California law, a driver who suffers from a sudden illness which causes him to crash, is not negligent if that driver had no notice that he might become ill enough to impede his driving ability. This truck driver told the police that he was on the way home from work because he had been feeling ill. Our team of truck accident attorneys is investigating this collision, and will determine for the two injured men, if this driver was negligent.

The driver was not arrested and the police are still also investigating this truck accident.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Claude Wyle

11 Million Verdict in Solano County Wrongful Death Case

A Solano County jury awarded a family $11 million for the death of a husband and five year old son in a big rig crash on Interstate-80. The defendant was Swift trucking. This was the biggest award for a personal injury or wrongful death case in Solano County. The wrongful death plaintiff in this truck collision case suffered more than money can possibly compensate, however this jury did the right thing in making this trucking company accountable.

The trial last three weeks. There will be a punitive damage trial in March 2007. The complaint alleged improper training, forged log books and gross negligence. With all of the trucking accidents on I-80, it is good to see that the big rig drivers and their trucking companies are being made to pay for their wrongful conduct.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Claude Wyle

2.5 Million Settlement by our Truck Accident Lawyers

Our truck accident attorneys fought for, and won a $2,500,000 settlement, for a sixty-six year old woman, who was paralyzed when she was rear-ended and run off the road by a big rig, in Monterrey County, California. The truck driver lied to the CHP and said that our client had made and unsafe pass over the double yellow line, and that she had clipped the front of the big rig. Although the police report listed our client as the party at fault,

and there were no independent witnesses, we were able, through the use of truck accident reconstruction experts, and aggressive lawyering, to prove that the truck driver had lied to the CHP officer, and to obtain a policy limits settlement on our client's behalf. Our client sought enough compensation to help pay for past and future medical expenses, as well as for future attendant care, and pain and suffering for her paralysis and the loss of the use of her arms and legs. The trucking company was made fully accountable, after the case was set for trial in the Monterrey County Superior Court. As a part of the settlement, our attorneys negotiated substantial reductions of the liens of Medicare and our client's health insurance carrier.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Claude Wyle

Hit-and-Run Driver Surrenders Five Days After Serious Car v. Truck Accident

The driver of a car who rear ended a truck on the Altamont Pass on Highway 580 last Saturday, and fled the accident scene has surrendered to the CHP. A 22 year old woman who was driving a Toyota Echo rammed a pick-up truck full of people, causing the pick-up truck to go off the road and to roll over several times. The family of five who were in the car v. truck accident all suffered serious injuries, some critically serious injuries, and were taken to John Muir Medical Center.

The hit and run suspect is expected to be araigned on charges of felony hit and run on Thursday. As to why the offending driver turned herself in, the media attention and community interest probably played a major role. The CHP deserves major credit for bringing this motor vehicle accident into the public's consciousness.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Claude Wyle
