Five ounce tubes of toothpaste marked as being the Colgate brand have been recalled for containing a dangerous ingredient. The toothpaste was manufactured in South Africa and contains diethylene glycol. A recent warning was issued by the FDA to also avoid toothpaste made in China for the same reason.

After analyzing some counterfeit samples, Colgate said it agreed with the FDA's earlier statement that though the chemical posed a low level of health risk, it did not belong in toothpaste.

Colgate has contacted all of its accounts to make sure they have no fakes, the company said.

Diethylene glycol is found in antifreeze and can cause kidney and liver damage when consumed in large amounts. The toothpaste was sold in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.
