A man was robbed at an ATM in Martinez and then proceeded to follow the thieves in his car. Two armed men robbed the victim at a bank on Alhambra Avenue. They then drove away with another man and got into a car accident.

The victim handed over "everything but his car keys" and watched the robbers run to Walnut Avenue and get in a waiting silver Pontiac sedan containing a third man, Cmdr. Tom Simonetti said.

The victim got into his vehicle and followed the Pontiac as it traveled west on Highway 4. The driver of the Pontiac was trying to exit on McEwen Road when he accelerated, struck a curb and lost control of the car. It rolled several times before coming to rest -- badly smashed -- in a pasture.

All of the victim's belongings were found in the car wreck. The third man was injured in the accident and was taken to the hospital. He has been charged with armed robbery.
