11-year-old Oakland Girl Killed By a Hit-and-Run Driver

Alana Williams, a sixth-grader at Frick Middle School in East Oakland, was killed on October 16, 2009, as she walked through a crosswalk at a busy intersection on her way to school.

Muni finds almost 10% of riders are fare cheats 10.19.09

She had gotten off an AC Transit bus around 8 a.m. and was struck in the crosswalk on 64^th Avenue and Foothill Boulevard by a car described only as black Lexus, approximately three to six yeas old.

The Lexus, also heading south on Foothill, struck the girl as it maneuvered around the bus and turned right onto 64th Avenue and kept driving, police said. Police did not know whether the Lexus had run the stop sign there.

Police have not located the driver of the Lexus, but are continuing to search.

This story illustrates how important it is to protect our children with cameras and stoplights at unsafe intersections, as well as crossing guards and police presence if possible. Deadly San Francisco Intersection Takes Another Life

Sloat and 19th Avenue is one of the most dangerous intersections in the city of San Francisco. Last year, this intersection claimed seven fatal injuries. Wednesday, two cars, in a head-on collision, claimed the life of a 21-year-old pedestrian. An unidentified mother and her toddler were also struck, but survived, with moderate injuries.

Muni Bus Strikes Pedestrian

Early Tuesday morning, a Muni Bus struck a pedestrian at the corner of 6th and Market Street, in San Francisco, California. Passengers on the bus screamed at the driver to stop, but it was too late, the bus slammed right into the woman. The pedestrian survived, but suffered severe injuries. Police are currently investigating the incident, which is the 18th pedestrian versus Muni accident this year.

Alcohol Blamed in Fatal Highway Accident

Another drunk driver has shamelessly taken the life of another. Early Thursday morning, Zhang Bailan drove south on Highway 101 in San Francisco California. He was drinking earlier that night, and struck another motorist when he attempted to exit onto Third Street. The driver of the car Bailan struck suffered fatal injuries while his passenger suffered moderate injuries and was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital.

Muni Rider Rescued by Fellow Riders

An unidentified man narrowly escaped horrific injuries Tuesday evening. As the unknown man attempted to board a Muni train, his hand became caught in the door. Panicked passengers tried to stop the train. Just as the man was inches away from the wall of a tunnel entrance, one rider managed to stop the train by triggering an emergency release. The man refused medical treatment, and his whereabouts are unknown.

Injured Bicyclist Close to $150,000.00 Settlement

Approximately three years ago, San Francisco Police Officer, Philip Welsh, crashed into Robert Kellogg, a bicyclist. Officer Welsh was on duty and in uniform when he collided with Kellogg in San Francisco's "North Beach" District. Instead of trying to assist Kellogg, Officer Welsh fled before providing the injured cyclist with his full name or address, and never filed an accident report. Justice will soon be served; the San Francisco Police Commission will likely compensate Kellogg $150,000 for this inexcusable bicycle accident.

Reckless Teen Driver Causes Fatal Auto Accident

Rachel Vargas, a 14-year-old, was killed when the car she rode in lost control and slammed into the center divider on Interstate 680, near Pleasanton. Vargas was one of four passengers in a car driven by 19-year-old Drori Levi. Police say he was driving at an extremely high rate of speed, which likely was the cause of this auto accident. No criminal charges have been filed against Levi. It is unknown at this time if Vargas' family will pursue a wrongful death claim.

Woman Drives into Walnut Creek Market

A woman driving a car drove into the Martinez Family Produce Market in Walnut Creek on Wednesday afternoon. The driver of the car was not hurt in the car accident. A 10-year-old boy was injured. He was in the market at the time of the accident.

The driver,

68, of Walnut Creek, was driving a loaned 2007 Lexus RX 350 when she failed to negotiate a right-hand turn into the market, struck a curb, lost control and drove into the building and hit the rear wall, said CHP spokesman Scott Yox.

The boy was treated at Children's Hospital in Oakland. He had some scrapes and bumps from the accident. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the accident and no citations have been issued.

TTDDM: Texting and Driving Don't Mix

Inexperienced drivers should keep both hands on the wheel at all times. This is precisely why Senator Joe Simitian introduced legislation that would ban all drivers under 18-years-old from texting, or using any electronic device, and driving. Perhaps this bill will prevent fatal accidents like the one in New York earlier this summer. Five teens suffered fatal injuries in the Finger Lake's region when the alleged "texting driver" swerved head-on into a tractor-trailer. Let's hope legislature gets in right and passes this one.

Woman Tragically Killed in Train Accident

Britta Aker, who was just 27-years-old, was killed early yesterday morning when she walked across Union Pacific Railroad tracks in Newark, California. Our hearts go out to the family of this young woman; especially knowing that it will be difficult for them to recover damages for civil liability. This is true because most courts will hold that railroad tracks themselves are sufficient warning to the danger of being struck by a train, and therefore tend to rule in favor of the defendant railway company.
